Home Window Types

Vinyl

Among the most popular window replacement options, vinyl windows are by far the most prevalent. They are relatively inexpensive, maintenance-free, make a smooth-operating window and insulate well. Despite their attractive appearance, they are only available in white and tan and cannot be painted.

 Aluminum

It is true that aluminum windows produce poor insulation but installing dual-paned aluminum windows with low-e glass instead of old single-pane aluminum windows will significantly improve insulation. Aluminum frames can be anodized with dark bronze to get that dark frame look or clear anodized to keep a mid-century contemporary look.

Fiberglass

In addition to insulating well, fiberglass windows are maintenance free and available in a variety of colors. Moreover, if you desire to change the color scheme at a later date, these can be easily painted. It should be noted that fiberglass windows tend to be relatively costly, usually in the same price range as high-end wood windows.

Wood

Windows made of wood are available both with and without an exterior cladding for low maintenance. For restoring an old home, you may want to choose windows without exterior cladding in order to remain as true as possible to the original windows. You will have to paint them regularly, and clad wood windows are nearly as expensive as dual-glazed windows with low-e glass. There are several colors and materials available for exterior cladding.

Glass Options

Single glazed vs. Dual glazed

Window with only one layer of glass is known as a single-glazed window. Dual-glazed (or dual-pane) windows consist of two layers of glass separated by an airspace that’s hermetically sealed. A single-glazed window doesn’t have many problems with the glass, except for the possibility that the glass might break, but single-glazed windows are very inefficient at insulating your home. Dual-glazed windows offer the advantage that trapped air between the panes of glass will act as an insulator in the same manner as air trapped between the feathers of a down comforter will act as an insulator.

Low-E Glass

Low-E is the short form of “low-emissivity,” which is also known as low-thermal conductance. This technology allows a large amount of visible light through to your home, so solar heat gain and fading will be reduced without being uncomfortably dim. It’s almost universal that low-e glass is used in new windows but upgrading from standard Low-E to high-performance Low-E will increase energy efficiency even further.

Low-Maintenance Coatings

A low-maintenance coating is becoming more widely available for some window manufacturers, sometimes called “self-cleaning” glass. Although it is overstated to call these coatings self-cleaning, they do provide cleaner windows and make them much more convenient to clean.

Argon Gas

Gasses such as argon, which is colorless, odorless, inert, and denser than air, can be placed between two glass panels to improve a building’s thermal performance and reduce its energy consumption.

What are my options for window frame materials?

There are four primary materials for window frames:

  • Among the most popular materials is vinyl, which is low-maintenance, cost-effective, and efficient. With excellent balance of cost and features, vinyl replacement windows provide the best value for money.
  • While fiberglass is a bit expensive, it is durable, offers superior performance, and requires little maintenance.
  • A commercial application is best suited to aluminum.

What are my options for window glass?

Modern windows incorporate advanced glass technologies to increase energy efficiency. The following are the most popular options:

  • Usually a double-paned window consists of two panes of glass separated by an air pocket.
  • The triple-paned window consists of three panes of glass and has two spaces for air to pass through.
  • A gas infill such as argon or krypton reduces heat transfer even further.
  • The Low-E coating on glass reflects heat rather than absorbing it.
  • The spacers at the perimeter of the windows minimize the transfer of heat.

You can noticeably reduce your energy bills and stop drafts for good by replacing your old windows with windows that use high-efficiency glass. You will be able to enjoy your home in every season.

What affects replacement window costs?

Windows, glass packages, and frame materials – as well as their sizes, quantities, and quality – influence window costs. Your choice of company also makes a difference.
